Porta Potties in Oklahoma Storm Season: Placement, Safety, and Cleanup

Towable trailer carrying porta potties

Spring in Oklahoma brings wind, hail, and tornado warnings. A porta potty on an open job site or event lawn needs a plan for all three. This guide covers placement, anchoring, safety, and what to do once the storm passes.

When is storm season a risk for porta potties in Oklahoma?

Spring storm season in Oklahoma peaks in May, and tornadoes can happen in any month, per the National Weather Service. A standard porta potty weighs only about 160 pounds empty, so strong winds can tip a unit on an open site. Plan placement and anchoring before the first storm watch.

Job sites with bare lots and events in open fields carry the most risk. Units next to buildings, fences, or tree lines take less direct wind.

How do you keep a porta potty from tipping over in high winds?

Staking or strapping is the main fix for a 160-pound unit, and we do it on open sites at no charge when you ask. Set each porta potty on level, firm ground next to a building or solid fence that breaks the wind. Avoid hilltops, open fields, and soft soil.

Site conditionStorm riskWhat to ask for
Open lot or field, no wind break
High
Staking or strapping at no charge
Next to a building or fence
Lower
Staking if storms are in the forecast
Soft soil or low ground

A gravel or dry spot the truck can reach
Event lawn with tents
Medium
Units at least 10 feet from tents

Tell us about the site when you book. For job sites with several units, the construction porta potty rental page explains placement and weekly service.

Is a porta potty safe shelter during a tornado warning?

A porta potty gives 0 protection in a tornado and should never be used as shelter. The National Weather Service advises moving to a sturdy building, on the lowest floor, in a small interior room away from windows. Plan a shelter spot for every crew member or guest before storm season starts.

The National Weather Service tornado safety page lists what to do before, during, and after a tornado. Event hosts should name a shelter building on the site plan and tell staff where it is.

What should you check on a porta potty after a storm?

After a storm, check 4 things before use: the unit stands upright, the door latches, the base has no leaks, and the path is clear. If a unit tipped, keep people away and call (918) 217-1414. We recheck tipped units after storms.

  • Keep people away from a tipped or leaking unit.
  • Do not lift, drag, or reset the unit yourself.
  • Take a photo of the unit and its spot for the service crew.
  • Clear limbs from the truck path so the crew can reach it.

Renters must not move units. Damage from moving a unit is billed at repair cost, so leave the reset to the service crew.

How fast can you get emergency restrooms after a storm?

Same-day porta potty delivery runs Monday through Saturday for storm cleanup. Order by 1 p.m. for Zone 1, which covers Tulsa and towns within about 25 road miles, or by 11 a.m. for Zones 2 and 3. The same-day fee is $75 per order, not per unit.

Homes that lose water or sewer after a storm often need a toilet right away. Roofers and cleanup crews need one on site for the days of repair work. A one-week rental for 4 to 7 days costs $195 all-in for a standard unit in Zone 1.

Crew size sets the count. The OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 sanitation standard calls for at least 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. See same-day porta potty delivery for cutoff times and home repair porta potty rental for homeowner jobs.

What if a storm hits on the day of your event?

Storm forecasts can change an event plan fast, and cancellation is free until 2 p.m. the business day before delivery. After that, a late cancellation carries a $50 trip fee. Date changes are free when the new date is open, so moving the date usually costs nothing.

Watch the forecast 2 to 3 days out and decide early. If you move the date, call (918) 217-1414 Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Weekend events deliver Friday or Thursday and pick up Monday, with no Sunday service.

For outdoor events in May, ask for staking when you book. Details on event delivery are on the event porta potty rental page.

How should outdoor event hosts plan restrooms in storm season?

Outdoor event hosts in April and May should plan restrooms with 3 storm steps. Anchor the units, keep them 10 feet from tents, and set a rain plan for soft ground. Lake and ranch sites need gravel or dry ground after rain so the truck can reach each spot.

Wet ground also changes the path for guests. A wheelchair-accessible unit needs about an 8-foot-wide flat path, and mud makes that hard to keep. Pick a higher, firm spot for the wheelchair-accessible porta potty and mark it before delivery.

Book 3 to 7 days ahead for spring weekends, and earlier for 5 or more units. If storms push your date, a free date change keeps the same order in place.

What is a simple storm-season checklist for porta potty renters?

A storm-ready porta potty plan has 5 steps: a sheltered spot, staking, 10 feet from tents, a named shelter building, and a post-storm check. Call before anyone uses a unit that tipped or leaks. Never use a porta potty as shelter.
